A small rural community in southwest Georgia,
Fort Gaines is about 55 miles west of Albany, near
Lake Walter F. George. Agriculture, tourism, a championship golf course and great hunting

First established as a frontier fort in 1814, Fort Gaines also served as an Indian fort in 1836 and a Confederate fort in 1863. You can enjoy reliving history as you explore the original site of the fort, located on a scenic bluff overlooking the fabled Chattahoochee River. Adjoining the fort is a replica frontier village and numerous other historic attractions.
George Bagby State Park, situated on the shores of Lake Walter F. George, contains a full service marina, swimming beaches, playgrounds, picnic areas and shelters, and nature trails.
Other nearby attractions include Providence Canyon State Conservation Park, Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park, Florence Marina State Park and Westville 1850s Historic Village.
